Hydro Jetting vs. Snaking: What’s the Difference?
When a drain slows down or backs up, most homeowners just want one thing: get the water moving again. But not all drain cleaning methods work the same way. Two of the most common professional options are snaking and hydro jetting.
Both can be useful, but they solve problems differently. Understanding the difference can help you know what to expect when you call a plumber and why one method may be recommended over the other.
What Is Drain Snaking?
Drain snaking, sometimes called rootering, uses a long flexible cable with a cutting or grabbing attachment at the end. The cable is fed into the drain line to break through or pull back a clog.
Snaking is often a good option for simple blockages, such as:
- Hair buildup
- Soap scum
- Small food clogs
- Soft obstructions
- Minor toilet or sink blockages
In many cases, snaking can open the line quickly and allow water to drain again. It is a reliable method for clearing a blockage, especially when the clog is close to the fixture or is not caused by heavy buildup inside the pipe.
What Is Hydro Jetting?
Hydro jetting uses highly pressurized water to clean the inside of a drain or sewer line. Instead of simply poking through the clog, hydro jetting helps wash away buildup from the pipe walls.
Hydro jetting can be useful for tougher problems, including:
- Grease buildup
- Sludge
- Heavy soap residue
- Recurring clogs
- Scale and debris inside the line
- Certain sewer line blockages
Because hydro jetting cleans more of the pipe interior, it can be a stronger option when a line keeps backing up after ordinary drain cleaning.
The Main Difference
The simplest way to think about it is this:
Snaking clears a path through the clog. Hydro jetting cleans the line more thoroughly.
A snake may get the drain flowing again, but some buildup can remain inside the pipe. Hydro jetting uses water pressure to help scrub the inside of the line, which can reduce the chance of the same buildup causing another clog right away.
That does not mean hydro jetting is always the right choice. Some older or damaged pipes may need to be inspected first. That is why a professional plumber may recommend a sewer camera inspection before hydro jetting, especially if there are signs of pipe damage, roots, or repeated backups.
When Snaking May Be Enough
Snaking may be the right choice when:
- The clog is isolated to one drain
- The blockage is minor
- The plumbing is older and needs a gentler approach
- The problem is not recurring
- You need a quick solution for a simple clog
For example, a bathroom sink clogged with hair may not need hydro jetting. A basic drain cleaning may solve the problem.
When Hydro Jetting May Be the Better Option
Hydro jetting may be recommended when:
- Multiple drains are slow at the same time
- The same drain keeps clogging
- There is grease or sludge buildup
- A main sewer line is backing up
- A camera inspection shows heavy debris inside the pipe
- Standard snaking only provides temporary relief
This is especially common in kitchen lines, commercial drains, and main sewer lines where buildup can collect over time.
Why a Sewer Camera Inspection Can Help
If a drain problem keeps coming back, guessing can get expensive. A sewer camera inspection allows a plumber to see what is happening inside the line.
A camera inspection can help identify:
- Grease buildup
- Tree root intrusion
- Broken or offset pipe sections
- Bellies or low spots in the line
- Heavy debris
- Blockages that need a different approach
Once the cause is known, it is easier to decide whether snaking, hydro jetting, repair, or another solution makes the most sense.
Avoid Relying on Chemical Drain Cleaners
It can be tempting to pour a chemical drain cleaner down the drain and hope for the best. But chemical drain cleaners can be harsh on plumbing systems and may not solve the real problem, especially if the blockage is deeper in the line.
For recurring clogs, slow drains, or sewer backups, professional drain cleaning is usually the safer and more effective choice.
